Signs of Spring

Herring, herring everywhere...

Herring, herring everywhere…

For now, the clear skies have brought cooler weather–into the low 20’s at night, but in the harbor we’ve seen the first sign of spring: for the past two days Thomas Basin has been full of herring.

They will probably be here for a week or two, then move on as they always do, but meanwhile, the graceful antics of the harbor seals entertain us as they glide under the boats and docks, gorging themselves or just chasing the herring for sport.

And they remind us that it may be time to grab our fishing rods and head out after the elusive winter King.
