The Ketchikan Yacht Club is sponsoring a weekly sailing event on Tongass Harbor with the starting line at Red Buoy WR-6 (in front of Safeway). We start each Wednesday at 1700 and end the evening with a potluck at the club house.

The Club goal is to provide sailing and boat handling opportunities to club member-owned boats. The KYC desires to raise its profile in the community and increase membership by providing local sailors an opportunity to improve seamanship skills.

    Little Norway Festival, Petersburg Alaska

    May 14th to May 17th 2020

Hello! Several KYC members have expressed an interest in meeting up at this very Alaskan Festival. Below you will find some information to help you decide if this is the year for you to go. The first part is information gathered in January 2020 and the second part is possible cruising itinerary. A quick disclaimer….any info can change between research date and booking date and no one should rely on another’s chart plotter. As prudent and safety conscience mariners, please double check everything!

Petersburg….why go? Because it is there.

Little Norway festival has been celebrated since 1958. It is a celebration of Norwegian Heritage, the signing of Norway’s constitution, U.S. Armed Forces Day, coming of spring and the beginning of fishing season. There are parades, indoor and outdoor dances, music and high jinx. Dress Code seems to be Viking/Valkyrie casual.

Please google Petersburg Chamber of Commerce. There you may view 2019 schedule of events and in early they will post the schedule of event for 2020. According to the harbormaster, Friday and Saturday are the days to come with Sunday winding down early.

Getting There & Staying there …. more ways than one.

    Your boat:

Petersburg Harbormaster 907.772.4688 VHF Channel 16

Tom Logan worked up the attached itinerary using his experience and chart plotter. We hope it will help you decide to go!

I spoke with the harbormaster. They (like KYC and Ketchikan Harbors) do not take reservations for moorage. She assured me that available space should not be a problem as many of the fishing boats will have left for the season. She also said that while they cannot reserve a space, if we contact her a few days in advance, they will do their best to dock us together. And finally, there is good anchorage nearby for boats that would rather anchor out and skiff in.

    Airplane:

Alaska Air flies daily into Petersburg. $147 or 5000 miles one way

    Flight 65 Ktn-Ptb 8:50 -10:30 am Flight 64 Ptb –Ktn 3:00 – 4:45pm

    Ferry:

    $79 one way

Ktn – Ptb Fridays only 10am-7:45pm

    Ptb – Ktn Mondays only 2:45am – 12:30pm

    Lodging:

A few KYC members have offered sleeping space aboard their boats. If interested please let me know and we will help coordinate that as we get closer to the ‘go’ date.

    Hotels:

    Expedia.com listed two B & B s and five hotels.

    See you on the water!

    Donna Ryan, M/V V’ger

Yacht Club members and guests are invited to come to the clubhouse after work on Friday to grill their own burgers and feast on other potluck dishes, snacks and drinks. The KYC supplies hand- pressed fresh-ground sirloin burgers with all of the fixin’s.  The grill will be hot at 6pm.

Friday Hamburger Nights, a KYC tradition, began years ago to encourage KYC members to have a quick dinner before hitting the water for the weekend. It quickly evolved into the popular Friday evening social event that we enjoy today. Whether your goal is to have a quick dinner and head out on the water, or spend all evening visiting on the dock, come on by for a good time.
